Introduction to Grade Inflation in Universities Over Time

What is Grade Inflation?

Grade inflation is defined as the rise in the average grade assigned to students. It is a trend that has been followed since the 1960s by researchers. For a century, the commonly used grading scale A-F has been used to score students across the nation on their knowledge of a subject.

Grade inflation in Universities

Now you may be asking, what does grade inflation have to do with me? Well, if you’re a college student, the rise in average grades, has directly impacted you. In fact, grade inflation has been tracked back to the 1960s, during the Vietnam war. Studies have found that up until the Vietnam war, the average grade in a majority of colleges was a C for over fifty years. Then, grades began to rise at an exponential rate.
